Tara is a very popular bodhisattva, as much in the eyes of laymen as
for Buddhist monks. She is liberator, star, and saviour, the one who
helps crossing to « the other bank ». Her peaceful or angered forms
are associated with various colours and fonctions: to protect against
real or spiritual dangers, to destroy illusion, to discern desire, to
transmute anger, and to take away the inherent fear of existence. One
meditates on her to developp compassion, longevity, recovery, and serenity.
She can represent prosperity or power. She is either devastating, consuming
wicked persons, or the light that saves the threatened traveller. She
dominates the power of time, and sanctifies the sufferings of the body
to force it to see the supremacy of mind. Her power can destroy an entire
solar system.
Tara has similarities with the Dakini, goddess of Hinduism and Buddhism.
She moves around the sky, with the aid of a magical faculty, the sky
symbolizing wisdom. The word Dakini means ability, skill. She makes
use of skilful means with a view to being alert. She is superficial
or wise, witch or feminine devil, legendary personality. She often has
the appearance of a naked woman who symbolizes the natural and wild
state, the lack of « ego » or mental obstacles.
