The justice
Themis belongs to the Titans . Daughter of heaven and earth, the fable says she wanted to keep her virginity, but Jupiter forced her to marry him and they fathered the law of fairness, peace and the seasons. In Olympus, she helps the « God » giving advice, inspired by caution and love of justice.
From the 16th century on, artists covered her eyes. According to some, it meant that justice is blind, impartial. Themis favoured nobody and did not know those who she was judging. According to some others, it was a matter of making fun of Courts that were taking advantage of their power, tolerating violations of the law.
The blindfold could mean that love strikes blindly, or that the distribution of wealth is done at random.
On an esoteric level, blindfold eyes mean inner retreat, contemplation. So the eyes are closed to cupidity. This way, they help by creating a distance from the ignorant world and for reception of enlightenment.
