Ardhanarî is the androgynous form of Shiva, in Hinduism, she symbolizes
the ambivalence of devine nature, neither man, nor woman, because the
origin of the whole trancends the distinction of gender. She is union
between the masculine principle, transcendental and original spirit,
and the feminine principle, energy of the source of all creation, original
matter. This union of spirit and matter that would be the origin of
univers, the essential cosmic being who has been after that, devided
into 2 distinct beings. In the jewish tradition, the first human was
androgynous, male and female in one body, but this body could not benefit
anyone, could not have any objective to reach, from whitch the separation
and later, the need of knowledge arose.
In antiquity, , the androgynous was tolerated as a model combining the
magical and religious powers of both sexes. Some people saw there the
divine message sent to connect humanity and the spiritual world.
In the Platonic theory, the human being of the 3 sexes, male, female
and hermaphrodite, having caused God's anger, were separated by Zeus,
each one in two halfs. From whitch came the incessant quest to regain
the other half in the phenomenon of love.
